Thinking about booking maternity photos? Here is a list of everything you need to know. What are maternity photos, different maternity photo ideas, what to wear, thinking ahead for newborn photos, and when to book them. Tips from maternity photographer Jena Mathews / Jena Lee Photographs.
WHAT IS MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY?
Maternity photography is photos of you while you are pregnant. There are lots of reasons parents want to book maternity photos. Some parents want to show their babies after they’re born. Others want to celebrate starting / growing their family. Very often, families with toddlers do maternity portraits to commemorate their final weeks together before the new baby arrives. As a photographer, I obviously love documenting the changing seasons of our lives. I think photographing your pregnancy is a beautiful thing.
WHAT KIND OF MATERNITY PHOTOS CAN WE DO?
I am an advocate for incorporating your everyday life into your maternity photos whenever possible. At the moment, your daily life might feel mundane, but five years from now you will enjoy looking back on it. Think about how you have spent most of your maternity time and what are a few things you might want to remember? These are good things to think about before booking maternity photos.
Indoor maternity photography is perfect for the colder months or anybody who loves warm cozy in-home portraits. These are less traditional and more personal. They are easy going with a laid-back and comfortable feel.
Outdoor maternity portraits are great for families who already have kids that like to move around. Outdoor portraits are beautiful for incorporating the surrounding landscape or for parents who enjoy spending time outside. I recommend thinking about a location that is meaningful to you or that you enjoy spending time at. Photographers also usually have a few great locations on hand too, don’t be afraid to ask for their recommendation.
*Studio maternity photos: These are not something that I offer right now at Jena Lee Photographs. If you are looking for information about preparing for a studio maternity photography session check out Sneakers & Lipstick or Reflections of Life Photography‘s guides.
HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHER FOR YOU?
First of all, before booking maternity photos be sure to take a look around. Take some time to decide what kind of photography style you are drawn to. Do you like outdoor sunny photos, indoor cozy portraits, or more posed studio styles? Use resources like Pinterest to create a collection of images you like. This will help you know what kind of maternity photographer to look for. Like I mentioned above, there are three primary different styles of maternity photos: indoor, outdoor and studio. Once you know which style you like, start looking around at different photographers in your area.
The most important part of choosing a maternity photographer is finding somebody that you are comfortable with. If you know you can trust your photographer during your photo session, you are going to enjoy the experience so much more. This in turn will help you look way more relaxed, comfortable and candid in your portraits … which everybody loves!
WHAT TO WEAR?
This is the number one question I get from parents thinking about booking maternity photos. As your body changes, it’s likely that you already ask yourself this question every day. Staying on trend with creating real life / lifestyle maternity portraits, think about how you are feeling these days.
Wearing loungewear around the house creates beautiful cozy indoor portraits. Or if you feel the urge to dress up and get outside for scenic landscape maternity photos, that’s great too! It all depends on how you are feeling. Remember there will be time to do a different photo style if you book newborn or milestone photos later in the year.
When it comes to what to wear for your maternity photos, I suggest anything that makes you feel comfortable and happy. That could be pants, jeans, a dress, sweats or nothing at all. Some of my favourite maternity photo sessions have been when parents opt for a more casual look.

ADOPTION + SURROGACY
Maternity photos are inclusive of all genders, relationships, people and stories. Adoptions and surrogacy are part of your story. No matter how your baby comes into your life, it is worth documenting. If you are adopting, working with a surrogate parent, or have another story, you should definitely still book maternity photos! One day you will be able to share this incredible story with your baby and have beautiful portraits to go along with it.
THINK BEYOND MATERNITY PHOTOS …
Before booking maternity photos, think about the year ahead of you. Once your baby arrives, you will likely want newborn or milestone photos too. Also make sure to consider having a birth photographer.
Here at Jena Lee Photographs, most parents start by booking maternity photos. From there, you have the option to add on birth photography, newborn photos, and other milestone sessions. Your baby changes so quickly throughout the first year. Lots of parents schedule photo sessions every few months. Our most popular baby photography package is maternity, birth, fresh 48 / newborn, six-months and one-year-old photo sessions. Single photo sessions are also available.
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK?
Here at Jena Lee Photographs, I recommend booking maternity photos during the second trimester. This way I can guarantee my availability for you and we can start to get to know each other. It is so nice when we arrive to your maternity photo sessions as friends rather than strangers.
I recommend getting in touch with a photographer during the second trimester. Then schedule your maternity photo session around 32-35+ weeks, depending on how you are feeling.
