Most people choose to visit Banff for the stunning mountain landscapes and glacial rivers. While you’re here in one of the most beautiful places, set aside some time for a family photography session. A visit to the Banff National Park and Rocky Mountains is one to remember forever. Make sure to document these family memories in the mountains with a family photography session.
A Bit About Banff
Banff is located in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. It is a small resort town nestled in the valley, surrounded by huge mountain peaks. As you walk the streets of Banff you will be surrounded by small chateau-style shops and 360 degree mountain views.
Given its beautiful landscapes and views, Banff is a very popular tourist destination. In my opinion, it is worth the hype and definitely a worthy place to visit. As a family photographer, I also think it’s the perfect place to consider doing a family photography session.
Family Photography in Banff
I grew up in this area and don’t think that I will ever grow tired of the views here. Banff National Park and Lake Louise are one of the top tourist destinations for good reason. The mountain ranges, the turquoise glacial lakes and the golden larches make this area a dream. I am so lucky to be a family photographer here.
My approach for family photography in Banff is to combine the relaxed feeling of being on vacation with the amazing mountain views. Everyone loves those perfectly candid photographs and that’s what we will create together.
A Few Family Photo Ideas
Whether you feel adventurous or more relaxed, here are a few ideas for your family photography session:
Watch the sunset from the Mt. Norquay Lookout | This is one of my favourite things to do for family photography in Banff. It’s very easy to get here, just a quick drive from Banff. We all get to watch the sunset behind the mountain horzion, all while creating beautiful family photos.
Visit Moraine Lake and Lake Louise | A trip to Banff must also be accompanied by a visit to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. This obligatory 45-minute road trip will be one of the highlights of your time here. Since it’s such a popular destination, I recommend doing our photo session as close to sunrise or sunset as possible. It’s also a good idea to take the shuttle so that we don’t have to mess around with the extremely limited parking.
Toast champagne at Lake Minnewanka | At the time of writing this post, most families are reconnecting after the pandemic travel restrictions. This has led to many champagne fuelled celebratory family photography sessions. Personally, I think this family photo idea should stick. Especially in a gorgeous location such as Lake Minnewanka (10 minute drive from Banff).
Ride one of the sightseeing gondolas | There are a few gondolas around Banff and they are a great way to arrive at a beautiful viewpoint, without the hike.
Icefields Parkway | Maybe you want to get out of Banff and try something a little different. The Icefields Parkway is peppered with some really great destinations. There are lots of lakes and viewpoints that are worth checking out and your family photography session at.
Banff National Park is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Imagine your own family photography session there?
No matter which stage of life your family is in, I believe it’s always a good time for photos. In five years you will be so happy you took the time to document this trip.
