Maternity, newborn + milestone baby photography FAQ
If you are looking for maternity and newborn photography that is candid and artistic, welcome to Jena Lee Photographs. Maternity and newborn photography are part of my Baby Photography Plan. This photography plan was created for parents who want their baby’s milestones photographed in a way that is authentic and real. My goal is to help parents create baby photography that is true to them and tells their story.
WHAT IS NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY?
Newborn photography is photos of your baby between 1-3 weeks old.
Most parents want newborn photography to document how little their baby used to be. As you know, babies grow so quickly. Sometimes seemingly overnight! This is why newborn photography can be so powerful for parents. With a focus on their tiny baby details — like their wrinkled hands, pouty lip, newborn fuzz — you will always have beautiful photos to remember how small they were.
In general, my newborn photography is documentary lifestyle. What this means is that we will work together to create real moments to photograph instead of staging them. In the end, you will have photos of your real life that capture your real moments together. My goal as your photographer is to help you photograph your real life and experience with your newborn baby.
★★★★★ — “There was no doubt in my mind — or my husband’s — that Jena was our go-to photographer. She was so patient during the whole process and was there for every step along the way. They truly are a masterpiece, each and every single one.”Kristen Hodge, Calgary Alberta
WHAT IS MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY?
Maternity photography is photos while your baby is still growing inside you. Generally, I recommend doing maternity photography anywhere between 30-38 weeks depending on how comfortable you feel.
Lots of women question if they need maternity photography. It’s a fair question and one I encourage you to really think about. In my experience, some women have maternity photos taken to show to their baby later on. Other women do them to mark the end of one chapter before the next one begins. Very often, families with other young children do maternity photos to celebrate their previous child.
Here is a great article about Why I Wish I Had Taken Maternity Photos.
In the end, maternity photography can be whatever you want it to be. My advice would be to do maternity photos and to incorporate something unique about your pregnancy into them. For example, if you have been exhausted the whole time we can create really beautiful maternity photos indoors in your bed or in a favourite chair. Or if you find solace in a hot shower/bath, let’s make artwork from that.
Soon enough, the focus will primarily be on your baby. For this reason, I love to make your maternity photos an artistic representation of you.
WHAT IS THE BABY PHOTOGRAPHY PLAN?
Maternity and newborn photography are part of my Baby Photography Plan. This plan is multiple photo sessions throughout your baby’s first year of life. The goal is to photograph various baby milestone’s so that in the end you have a beautiful representation of their first year.
Available baby photography sessions include maternity, birth, fresh 48 hospital portraits, newborn, 3-months, 6-months, 9-months and one-year-old.
You can select just one, a few, or all of the available baby photo sessions.
WHERE DO WE TAKE PHOTOS?
Maternity, newborn or any baby milestone session can happen indoors or outdoors. Included with your photo sessions is custom location scouting.
Depending on what is going on in your life at the time and what kind of feeling you want your baby photos to have, your sessions can be indoors or outdoors.
Indoor maternity or baby photography has a very cozy and comfortable feeling. Sometimes it’s nice to stay indoors and incorporate your home into your maternity / newborn photography.
Outdoor sessions are beautiful too, especially in the British-Columbia Rocky Mountains where I based. There are lots of stunning landscapes that are very easy to access. From a life of growing up skiing and biking here, I always have a great list of outdoor photography locations on hand for you.
I’M NERVOUS IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA
That’s 100% normal. Rest assured that when you work with a professional, it is our job to help put those feelings at ease.
Before we take any photos, we will touch base a few times to make sure that we are a great fit for each other. This is important so that we have the same vision for the type of artwork you want to create and so that we can both be comfortable around each other.
My maternity and newborn photography sessions are always lifestyle. What this means, is that there is no awkward posing. For your maternity or newborn portraits, I will guide you into beautiful light and give you easy things to do or talk about.
Even the most camera shy people find that they can relax and be themselves for their maternity and newborn photography. To be honest, the majority of the lovely families you see on this website had some nerves beforehand. This is normal and I take pride in my ability to help my clients feel comfortable.
As your photographer, my goal is to create portraits that are true to who you are. I want you to feel comfortable throughout the entire process.
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Not only are we going to photograph beautiful maternity and newborn portraits but we are also going to print them to enjoy.
It’s a tragedy to spend so much time creating your photographs for them to die on a USB in a drawer. That’s not the experience I want you to have. After you create your newborn and maternity photography, I will help you design wall galleries, statement pieces, albums … whatever your heart desires.
My goal for you is for your portraits to bring you love every day. As you walk out the door to work or hustle your grown baby to school, I want your printed portraits to serve as a reminder. A reminder of why you are doing this in the first place. A reminder of the deep love you have for your family.
WHAT IS THE COST?
The sitting fee for each Baby Photography Plan session is 200 with the printed and digital photos sold separately from that. You will receive your sitting fee back as credit towards your digital/printed images at your ordering appointment.
The reason behind this is so that you can create the perfect package of exactly what you want. I believe in quality over quantity. I do not want do leave you hanging with hundreds of photos and no idea what to do with them. For this reason, we will work together to nail down what photos would be meaningful to create, then I will guide you through the different digital and print options. Some families purchase just one or two favourites and some purchase collages, albums, and prints. This way, there is something for everyone.
If you have more questions about this, please submit an inquiry so we can talk more about your goals and I can help you figure out a custom quote.
