Moraine Lake Family Photos, Banff AB
If you ever travel to the Canadian Rocky Mountains, a trip to Moraine Lake is worth adding to your list of places to visit. Moraine Lake is well known for its turquoise glacial lake and stunning view of the Valley of Ten Peaks. It is a very popular destination amongst visitors and locals for good reason. As a family photographer, it's one of my favourite photo locations ever. It is easy to get to with kids, and whether it is your first or hundredth visit, the view never gets old.
Last summer, I met the Jackiw family during their Rocky Mountain road trip. They wanted to do a family photo session during this special trip to show the kids when they are older. Since they planned to visit Moraine Lake anyway, it would be a great location for their photos too.
Family Photos at Moraine Lake
Parents travelling with small children will be happy to hear that it is very easy to get to Moraine Lake. All you have to do is pick a date, book a shuttle, then you are off. We decided to go early in the morning to avoid some of the crowds and catch nice light.
First, we climbed up The Rockpile Trail, which is an easy 300m walk up on top of a boulder field. This short trail brings you to a great viewpoint to see the lake and mountains.
We tucked into a small viewpoint along the side of the trail for their family photos. Since Moraine Lake is at a higher elevation, it's always chilly there, especially in the morning. This worked in my favour since one of my favourite ways to create candid photos for families is to get them to huddle together and keep each other warm.
Giving each other squeezes and warm hugs makes for perfectly candid moments to photograph. Add the beauty of Moraine Lake as the background, and we get some pretty incredible family photos.
