A Summer in Chile

Un Verano en Chile

Going to Chile in August wasn’t on my 2025 bingo card, especially mid-wedding-season, but here we are. Chile is far away and very cool. It’s as long as Canada is wide, the people are friendly, and the beach is only three hours from the ski hill.

“You went to …. ski… in August?”

Correct.

One of the best parts of meeting somebody new is that they expand your ideas of what is possible.

In a small sense, you get to show each other all of your favourite dinners, therefore doubling your recipe repertoire. In a larger sense, you sometimes end up in countries you hadn’t considered before.

The Highlights:

We rented a cabin in Las Trancas, near Nevados de Chillan. The first leg of our trip was spent skiing, barbecuing, and visiting the local market.

Then, as one does in Chile, we spent time chasing the weather (snow). This adventure took us across Chile, into Argentina, briefly through Patagonia, and back again.

My memories of Chile will be highlighted by hot springs, red wine, volcanic horizons, meat markets, and a never-ending, ever-evolving bag of trail mix.

  • Expect big storms and lots of wind
  • Thermas Geometricas is worth the drive
  • Ski while you can, otherwise enjoy the culture
  • The Canadian grocery system has nothing on the South American markets
