Rainy Day Wedding — Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

A Rainy Day Wedding At Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

What if it rains on my wedding day? A question that haunts most pre-wed couples. Especially those getting married in the mountains. For this couple, it had so far already been a particularly rainy summer at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden BC, and this weekend was no different. As everyone got ready for the wedding day, an afternoon storm prediction loomed over our heads. As their wedding photographer, I very honestly assured them that rain would not ruin their photos but rather make them better.

My philosophy for a wedding is to plan the bones of the day and leave the rest to unfold as it happens. As in, structure the big events but leave room for life to breathe and moments to happen naturally. When you plan every single motion of your wedding day, you don’t leave room for spontaneity, relaxation, and enjoyment. Rigid timelines and expectations will kill the vibe of your wedding photos long before a little rain does. Rain adds a chaotic and childlike energy to the day, both of which contribute to the joy, laughter, and authenticity of your wedding photos.

What if It Rains? Great!

Part of getting married in the Rocky Mountains is knowing that it comes with weather risks. It could snow in July, or the valleys can hang onto a fog for weeks. You never know what you are going to get. For this reason, couples who want to get married at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort should be open to any type of weather. And the good news is, these meteorological constraints are an excellent opportunity to add creativity and uniqueness to your day.

It is a common misconception that we need perfectly sunny skies to have great photography. In fact, the opposite is true. Getting caught in a storm, unseasonal snow on the mountains, or soft, foggy light all add interest to your day and photos. As long as you are madly in love with each other and all of the people who show up to celebrate you, and spend your day having a good time, your wedding photos will turn out beautifully, no matter the weather.

Weddings At Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden, British Columbia, is one of my favourite wedding venues to work at. It is a ski resort with a mountaintop restaurant, nestled between three mountain ranges and two rivers. The Eagle’s Eye Restaurant serves as their wedding venue, accessed by gondola year-round. However, what really makes Kicking Horse an international destination for couples is its unbeatable mountain views. No matter which way you look, you are surrounded by a beautiful valley and a sea of mountains as far as your eyes can see.
